Demand For Premium Travel On The Rise

Things are looking up for the airlines. Three of the nation’s largest carriers — Delta, American and United — report an increase in the demand for premium travel, including first- and business-class tickets. The positive report could be the first indication that the important corporate and business travel sector is recovering.

FAA Introduces Web Service

The Federal Aviation Administration announced plans to distribute more information regarding airport delays through a new Web service. The new Airport Status and Delays service, available via Data.gov, will combine FAA information on ground delays, airport closures, ground stops and arrival/departure delays with weather information from the National Oceanic and Atmosphere Administration.

A New Star

Brussels Airlines is officially a member of Star Alliance. The airline, welcomed into the alliance during an official ceremony last week, offers 200 daily flights to 55 European destinations and 14 African cities. With the newest addition, Star Alliance now offers 19,700 daily flights to 1,077 destinations in 175 countries. Brussels (BRU) is now a Star Alliance hub.

Oneworld Update

In other alliance news, oneworld has become the first global alliance to allow corporate clients to complete contracts electronically. The new application is available through an agreement with electronic signature company DocuSign. Member airlines are also enhancing their flight and hub offerings. American Airlines plans to boost schedules at Dallas/Fort Worth (DFW), Chicago (ORD), Miami (MIA) and New York (JFK).

Security Breach

The Transportation Security Administration is currently investigating an incident last week in which an internal guide to airport screening procedures was posted on the Internet. The document details which passengers are exempt from additional screening measures and showed examples of identification documents accepted by screeners.

Australia Lures International Airlines

The Australian government is looking to lure more international airlines and tourists to its smaller, regional international airports, including Cairns (CNS), Broome (BME) and Darwin (DRW).  The government is offering greater access to the four major gateway destinations to airlines making stopovers in regional airports.
