Wine Delights At 30,000 Feet

Every year, Global Traveler conducts a tasting to determine the best in airline business-class wines. And, as a recent USA Today article shows, even during this time of economic hardship, airlines refuse to reduce the costs spent on onboard wine selections. Estimates suggest airlines annually purchase 4.3 million gallons of wine and spend approximately $15 million on wine per year.

Seatback Advertising Takes Flight

AirTran Airways announced plans to unveil seatback advertising on all of its 138 Boeing jets. Implementation will take two weeks. The advertisements, measuring two-and-a-half by nine inches, will feature exclusive offers from airline partners. All of the full-color advertisements will be easily changeable.

Miles Alert

Take heed: American Express is warning all cardholders to pay their bills on time or forfeit their accrued miles and points earned for all purchases made in that month. And it will cost cardholders to get those points back. The new fee is linked to co-branded American Express airline credit cards, including those with JetBlue, Delta, Hilton and Starwood. Beginning in January, rewards will not be transferred to loyalty accounts if bills are not paid on time.

Carbon Offsets Ease Guilty Consciences

Once one of the first travel companies to support carbon offset purchases, Responsible Travel has now canceled the program, saying that these payments do not actually help reduce global emissions. Company officials also said the program encourages people to travel or consume more and distracts them from making behavioral changes, instead of actually helping the environment.

Americans Plan To Travel

According to a Deloitte LLP survey, 45 percent of Americans plan to take a vacation or leisure trip in the next four months. The trips specifically include paying for overnight accommodations between Thanksgiving and March. Eighteen percent of those surveyed will travel over the Thanksgiving holiday, while 22 percent plan to travel in December and 32 percent will travel after New Year’s and through March.

Qantas extended its limited-time sale through Jan. 29, 2010. The business-class sale fares are the lowest fares offered by the airline in the last decade and offer a savings of more than 50 percent off published fares. The fares are valid from Los Angeles (LAX), San Francisco (SFO) and New York (JFK) to Australia.

Save the date for your stay at a Leading Hotels of the World property. The hotel group’s advance promotion offers 30–50 percent savings on reservations made by Dec. 31. Double Frequent-Flyer Rewards

Double your reward credits with AirTran Airways. Through Feb. 10, 2010, the airline will offer double A+ Rewards credits to all A+ Rewards members flying to or from Milwaukee (MKE) to any other AirTran destination. When members purchase applicable travel, they will receive four credits for every trip instead of the normal two credits. The A+ Rewards program counts one-way trips rather than miles flown.
