Düsseldorf is known for its annual Christmas market. Repeat visitors can expect a treat this holiday season as the historic Old Town’s Christmas market concept has been completely re-imagined. The 2009 market runs from Nov. 19 through Dec. 23.

Iberia Airlines passengers are in for a treat as the airline introduces a brand-new Business Plus product. The project will overhaul all of the intercontinental business-class cabins, offering more room, comfort and privacy. The new seats will be fully flat seat-beds, and passengers will have approximately 86 inches of additional personal space and an almost 12 extra inches between rows.

BMI announced a new codeshare with Continental Airlines. The new agreement offers BMI customers a wider selection of American destinations, including New York (EWR) and Houston (IAH). BMI services are available from London (LHR), Manchester (MAN), Birmingham (BHX), Glasgow (GLA), Edinburgh (EDI) and Brussels (BRU).

According to a U.S. Travel Association announcement, 2010 projected increases in leisure, business and international travel will enable the travel industry to add almost 90,000 new jobs for Americans. Estimates indicate leisure travel will increase by 2 percent; business travel by 2.5 percent and international travel by 3 percent.

Since my first visit to the fabled Shangri-La region of China 10 years ago, the most welcome, and magical, change in the remote southwest province of Yunnan has been the appearance of the Banyan Tree in Lijiang. Located 120 miles north of Kunming in a high valley leading to Leaping Tiger Gorge and the Himalayas, Lijiang is a village whose old town has been a UNESCO World Heritage site since 1997, a picturesque remnant of the local Naxi minority peoples’ way of life. Although Lijiang is home to some passable 4-star hotels, the Banyan Tree, opened in 2006, has no companion.
