As concern swirls about the H1N1 flu outbreak, more travelers are relying on travel insurance. The World Health Organization continues to advise against travel restrictions, but the industry still faces challenges as the number of infected people increases. According to Travel Weekly, with uncertainties looming, travel protection plans and insurance policies are being hailed as the traveler’s only protection against cancellations and other changes resulting from the flu outbreak.

According to an American Express survey, 30 percent of U.S. consumers plan to make adjustments to Thanksgiving travel plans this year, but only 21 percent of those respondents say they plan to spend less than last year. “Spending & Saving Tracker” is the second report in a monthly series about consumers’ views on the economy, spending and saving.

Beginning Dec. 1, Air India will launch a new direct service between the United States and India. Boeing 777LRs will service the daily route between Washington, D.C. (IAD) and Delhi (DEL). The flights will depart Washington at 12:10 p.m. and stop in New York (JFK) before continuing on non-stop to Delhi.

The House of Representatives overwhelmingly approved a bill on pilot qualifications last week with a vote of 409-11. The new legislation will institute tougher regulations on pilot training, qualifications and schedules.

Another Trump property is set to open in New York City this winter. Trump Hotel Collection announced its first downtown property, Trump SoHo New York, will open on Feb. 1, 2010. The new property will tower 46 stories and boast 391 luxury guestrooms.

A campaign to allow Americans to travel to Cuba is gaining momentum, with both supporters and opponents predicting legislation will be approved.
