U.S. Runways: A Safe Place To Be

To quote Federal Aviation Administration administrator Randy Babbitt, “U.S. runways have never been safer.” According to a USA Today report, serious near-collisions between planes on U.S. runways rapidly decreased over the last year, marking the most significant drop in runway collisions in the last decade. In the year ending Sept. 30, narrowly averted crashes dropped by more than half, from 25 cases in 2008 to 12 in 2009. Incidents with commercial aircrafts also dropped significantly, falling from nine to two.

Lufthansa Update

Lufthansa’s A380 has taken to the skies. It made its maiden voyage from Toulouse over the south of France on Oct. 6. The test flight verified the aircraft’s onboard computer system. No irregularities were noted and the aircraft will soon be transferred to the Airbus hangar in Hamburg-Finkenwerder.

New Indigos In United Kingdom

Hotel Indigos are popping up all over the U.K. InterContinental Hotels Group has signed a deal for two new Hotel Indigo properties in Glasgow and Liverpool. The brand’s, IHG’s newest, global rollout began in 2009, with the Hotel Indigo London Paddington’s opening in January. The new properties join 27 North American properties.

Airline Delays: Future Predictions Look Grim

According to a recent Brookings Institution report, airline delays are likely to get worse as the economy recovers. The problems will be due to heavy concentrations of short trips between big cities and outdated air traffic control systems.

Delta And Atlanta Reach An Agreement   

The long debate between Hartsfield-Jackson International Airport (ATL) and Delta Air Lines has been settled. The two companies reached a lease agreement, extending Delta’s lease through 2017.
