The islands of Samoa, American Samoa and Tonga were recently ravaged by a tsunami. The devastating wave, caused by an 8.3 magnitude earthquake that developed 190 kilometers southwest of American Samoa, killed more than 200 people and destroyed several tourist resorts and villages. The American Red Cross is leading relief efforts in American Samoa.

According to The Chicago Tribune, several airlines are instituting new passenger fees in time for the holiday travel rush. Beginning Oct. 7, British Airways will charge business- and economy-class passengers to reserve seats more than 24 hours in advance.
