Commercial Aircraft Corp. of China, a government-controlled aircraft manufacturer, recently reported its first commercial jet, the C919, will be cheaper than comparable Boeing and Airbus models. According to a Bloomberg News report, the new manufacturer’s entry into the aviation market will greatly increase competition in the marketplace.

The Hilton is the Grande Dame of modern business hotels in Shanghai. For three decades, its lobby has been a prime gathering spot for upscale foreign travelers. I’ve stayed at the Hilton Shanghai several times since the 1980s, and I am always tempted back by its high service standards. The Hilton recently started losing ground to the major luxury chains flooding Shanghai. I was anxious to see if, after extensive renovations last year, it was still in the game.
