Following a year-long flap over a pending alliance between British Airways and American Airlines, the U.S. House Judiciary Committee is asking that federal antitrust officials be given more say over the potential agreement. In fact, the Judiciary Committee has asked the Department of Transportation to delay the decision indefinitely while lawmakers in the House and Senate urge DOT to take a stricter stance on airline alliances. Several key U.S. lawmakers are concerned about the abundance of emerging alliances and are urging the Obama administration to crack down on antitrust immunity laws. Concerns center on whether or not the alliances are aiding or hurting consumers. Proponents believe the alliances increase competition and choice and offer better prices, while opponents worry about potential monopolies and disadvantages to customers.
