Studies Examine The State Of Travel

A new report from the National Business Travel Association revealed trends in business travel and spending worldwide. The study estimates the total global business travel spending volume to be about $929 billion. This includes air, car, hotel and food and beverage spending.

Ethiopian Airlines’ Big Purchase

Ethiopian Airlines took a big step toward updating its fleet by placing orders for five Boeing 777-200LRs and twelve Airbus A350-900s. The purchase will make Ethiopian Airlines the first African carrier to order and operate the long-range 777-200LR.

Jet-It-Together is a new online community for people interested in private jet travel. The site matches members’ itineraries with those of other members to create shared trips, offering significant discounts and other cost savings on private jet travel. The website now hosts more than 1,000 trips.

Hotel Update

Smith Travel Research released findings on U.S. hotel industry performance for the first half of 2009. According to the report, revenue per available room dropped 18.7 percent in year-over-year measurements, while occupancy dropped 10.9 percent and the daily rate fell 8.7 percent to $98.66.

Registered Traveler Revival? 

Since Verified Identity Pass halted its Registered Traveler program in June, its competitor Vigilant Solutions has also gone out of business. The last remaining provider, Flo Corp., ceased operations at the one airport where it operated, but Flo Corp. and the National Business Travel Association are pushing for a full revival of the Registered Traveler program.

Social Media For Damage Control       

According to a New York Times article, while more and more businesses worldwide are turning to social media websites, like Facebook and Twitter, airlines are taking to the Internet to address passenger grievances and develop stronger relationships with potential customers. A passenger posted a YouTube video, “United Breaks Guitars”, angry over damage to his guitar by United baggage handlers. United’s first response came via Twitter.
