In response to the Colgan Air crash in Buffalo earlier this year, the Federal Aviation Administration and U.S. Transportation Secretary Ray LaHood are calling for a complete overhaul of pilot training and scheduling. The new rulings will institute several changes at regional and major U.S. airlines.

The Virgin group of airlines made several important announcements last week. Virgin Atlantic and V Australia have forged a new loyalty program agreement. The agreement allows Virgin Atlantic Flying Club members to earn points on V Australia flights and allows V Australia Velocity members to earn points on Virgin Atlantic flights.

U.S. airlines significantly improved on-time arrivals in 2009. Transportation Department reports show that 80.5 percent of flights operated by the nation’s 19 largest airlines arrived on time in May. On-time arrivals have improved every month of 2009 except March.

NASA is funding the development of a weather detection system aimed at aiding pilots in remote ocean regions. The system will detect turbulence and other severe weather in areas where little weather information is currently available.

British Airways finalized a launch date for its newest routing between London City (LCY) and New York (JFK). The all-business flights will start Sept. 29 and will be the first long-haul flights to operate from London City airport.
