The U.S. Department of Justice delayed the final approvals on Continental Airlines’ request for antitrust immunity by issuing a filing criticizing the Department of Transportation’s tentative approval of the request. Continental Airlines is looking to depart the SkyTeam alliance and join Star Alliance. The antitrust immunity request will allow the airline to tightly align with member airlines. The venture was proposed in conjunction with Air Canada, Lufthansa and United. The DOJ ruling reinforces the Obama administration’s tougher stance on immunity rulings.
