Chile Relief Falls Short

Two weeks after an 8.8-magnitude earthquake rocked Chile on Feb. 27, worldwide donations to the country pale in comparison to the outreach provided Haiti following its recent earthquake. Within 48 hours, $21 million had been raised through text message donations for Haiti, while only about $100,000 has been raised for Chile. According to the Christian Science Monitor, $437,500 per hour poured into Haiti. On the other hand, less than $1,100 per hour has been contributed to Chile.

Winter Weather Update

Following a rash of February snowstorms, Continental Airlines and US Airways included estimates of the financial impact of the weather in their February traffic reports. Continental reported approximately $25 million in lost revenue; US Airways estimated the lost revenue to be around $30 million. According to FlightStats.com, the hardest hit cities were New York, Philadelphia and Washington, D.C. Almost 38,000 flights were canceled by U.S. airlines in February.

Travel Promotion Act

The U.S. Travel Promotion Act has officially been signed into law. As reported in last week’s eFlyer, the bill was passed by the U.S. Senate and was awaiting approval from President Obama, who signed the act into law last Thursday. The act will create an organization dedicated to promoting travel to the United States and to explaining U.S. travel and security laws. The program will be partially funded through a $10 tax on visitors from countries in the Visa Waiver Program.

Good New For Business Travelers

According to a survey by aviation consultant Ascend, executives will fly more frequently and spend more on flights this year. Of the 250 business travelers surveyed, only 10 percent predicted a decrease in travel for the year. Thirty-five percent of respondents forecasted an increase in business trips.

Airline Announcements

EVA Air and US Airways are expanding their codeshare partnership. EVA flight codes will be listed on US Airways flights from Los Angeles (LAX), Charlotte (CLT), Philadelphia (PHL), San Francisco (SFO), Seattle (SEA) and Phoenix (PHX). The US Airways code will be placed on EVA flights from San Francisco, Los Angeles, Seattle and Taiwan (TPE).

Winglets — The Way To Go

Aviation Partners Blended Winglet technology has proven to be a worthwhile and environmentally friendly investment. According to a company announcement, the technology has saved airlines 2 billion gallons of jet fuel, equivalent to more than $4 billion, since its creation. Overall, this is equal to a CO2 reduction of 21.5 million tons. Approximately 3,700 aircrafts are outfitted with the technology.

Virgin America unveiled changes to its frequent flyer program Elevate. The new program offers more earning and redemption flexibility for members. Frequent flyers can now retain points indefinitely, as long as they earn or redeem points at least once over an 18-month time period. Points previously expired after 18 months.
