Air New Zealand is prepared to up the ante in economy. The airline will introduce a new, sleep-friendly section in the economy-class cabins of its long-haul flights. Select seats will offer a footrest, which can be raised to create a platform for sleeping. The new seating concept will be implemented on ANZ’s new Boeing 777-300ER aircraft, which will be delivered this fall. Of course, there is a catch.

Air Canada announced plans to add seven U.S. cities to its spring 2010 schedule, a promising sign that the airline industry is indeed recovering from the troubles of 2009. In May, Air Canada will add service between Toronto (YYZ) and Orange County, Calif. (SNA). Non-stop flights between Toronto and San Diego (SAN); Portland, Oregon (PDX); Memphis (MEM); and Cincinnati (CVG) will launch in June.

Tragedy struck once again last week when an Ethiopian Airlines Boeing 737 crashed into the Mediterranean Sea shortly after take-off from Beirut. The Addis Ababa-bound flight held 90 passengers and crew. There were no survivors. The plane went down in flames minutes after take-off on Jan. 24. Lebanon had been experiencing torrential rains and, at the time of the crash, there were lightning and thunderstorms.

2009 proved to be a prosperous year for Hilton Worldwide. The hotel group added 302 new hotels and more than 45,000 rooms in the last year. Hilton’s portfolio now consists of more than 3,500 hotels and 585,000 rooms. Hilton has 900 hotels slated to open in the coming years. Hilton opened more newly constructed guestrooms in the U.S. than any other company for the fourth consecutive year.

Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano traveled to Europe and met with foreign officials to discuss ways to boost aviation security. According to Napolitano, officials agree on four areas where efforts should be concentrated: information sharing, passenger vetting, better screening technology and international security standards.
