Japan Airlines filed for bankruptcy protection last week, marking the country’s largest-ever bankruptcy petition by a non-financial company. The company’s three-year restructuring will include shrinking operations, letting go of approximately one-third of the workforce and wiping out thousands of shareholders. The airline will be assisted by a $10 billion loan from the Japanese government and debt forgiveness from a number of creditors.

Lufthansa announced plans to expand its service in Florida. The airline will launch non-stop service between Munich (MUC) and Miami (MIA) beginning March 29. Also launching from Munich this summer are flights to Tashkent (TAS), Tehran (THR), Tallinn (TLL), Rostock (RLG) and Zadar (ZAD). The airline is also contemplating service to Iraq, with plans to serve Baghdad (SDA) and Erbil (EBL).

Silversea will offer world cruises beginning in 2011. The cruise line’s new Silver Spirit will depart Los Angeles on Jan. 29, 2011 for a 119-day journey. The ship will visit 60 destinations in 25 countries before concluding in Southampton, England on May 19, 2011. Some destinations include French Polynesia, Australia, Asia, Egypt, Italy, Monaco, Spain and Portugal.

As airlines expand WiFi services onboard, Amtrak has jumped on the bandwagon with plans to offer complimentary wireless Internet access on its Northeast Corridor routes. The service will launch in March on Acela trains between Boston, New York and Washington, D.C.

Erroll Southers, President Obama’s nominee to lead the Transportation Security Administration, withdrew his name from consideration last week. Obama tapped Southers as the nominee in September, but his confirmation was delayed because of concerns he would allow TSA employees to have collective bargaining rights. Southers was previously a top official with the Los Angeles Airport Police Department.

A Raytheon-designed airport security system has come under intense scrutiny after an Eyewitness News investigation found the system has yet to pass the testing phase. Originally purchased by the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey for installation at JFK, LaGuardia (LGA), Newark (EWR) and Teterboro (TEB), the perimeter detection system has far exceeded its $100 million tab and is not fully operational.

Qantas is a dealmaker for me in every way. Last winter they offered an economic stimulus package on flights from New York, Los Angeles (LAX) and San Francisco (SFO) to all major gateways in New Zealand and Australia. The deal, which essentially slashed the price of flights to that part of the world in half, enabled me to attend a friend’s wedding on the other side of the world.
