Positive Signs

November saw the best on-time performance of U.S. airlines in the last decade. Diminished flights and capacities have significantly reduced delays and cancellations. A flight is considered on time for delays of up to 15 minutes compared to the time shown in online reservation systems. Nineteen airlines had an 88.6 percent on-time rate in November, an increase over the previous November’s 83.3 percent on-time rate.

The Return Of Supersonic Travel

Following the final flight of the Concorde in 2003, fighter jet crews and astronauts have been the only people using supersonic flight. This could all change in 2015. Nevada-based Aerion Corporation announced plans to launch a Supersonic Business Jet in five years. Approximately $4 billion in orders have been placed for the $80 million jet. Aerion still needs to decide on a manufacturing partner.

Security Breach Leads To Reevaluation

Newark International Airport’s (EWR) Terminal C was closed for more than six hours last week after a security breach. In the wake of the incident, critics are calling for updated camera systems, training and exit lanes. A Transportation Security Administration officer did not see an un-ticketed passenger stepping under a rope barrier to join his companion in the secured area. Continental Airlines’ cameras captured the footage; TSA cameras were found not to be working properly.

Explosives Found On Dublin Flight

A Slovakian air passenger unintentionally carried explosives onto a Dublin-bound flight last week. Slovak Interior Minister Robert Kalinak acknowledged an airport-security test went awry and apologized to Irish officials for the oversight and for the three-day delay in announcing the error. Slovak authorities were testing checked baggage screening when they placed real bomb components in nine passenger bags. Eight bags were detected by security, while the ninth bag safely passed through and was loaded onto the Danube Wings flight.

World’s Tallest Building Opens

The world’s tallest building has officially opened its doors. The United Arab Emirates’ The Burj Khalifa, soaring 2,717 feet high, welcomed visitors beginning Jan. 4. Thousands gathered to watch a multimedia presentation at the base of the new skyscraper, which was originally named The Burj Dubai.
